Incoming State Senator Ram Villivalam endorses Dem Abdelnasser Rashid for Cook County Board
Rashid is taking on incumbent Republican Sean Morrison in southwest suburban district
CHICAGO (October 2, 2018)– Ram Villivalam, who beat Ira Silverstein to become the Democratic nominee for Illinois’ 8th District State Senate seat in the March primary, endorsed independent Democratic Cook County Commissioner candidate Abdelnasser Rashid on Tuesday in the southwest suburban 17th District.
“When I ran for office, it was because I knew that we needed effective, proactive and progressive leadership to step up and advocate for the needs of working families. That is true now more than ever, which is why I’m proud to support Abdelnasser Rashid for Cook County Board,” said Villivalam. “I know he will be a passionate voice for earned sick time and paid family leave, livable wages for working people, and a progressive approach to taxation that makes sure the very wealthy and big corporations are paying their fair share.”
“I am thankful to be endorsed by Ram Villivalam, who will be the first Asian-American State Senator and the first South Asian-American member of the Illinois General Assembly,” said Rashid. “This will be an exciting milestone for our state. His win shows us that voters are ready for diverse leadership, new perspectives, and want their leaders to stand strongly against abuses of power by elected officials.”
Abdelnasser Rashid is an independent Democrat running for Cook County Commissioner in the 17th District to be a voice for working and middle class families who continue to face growing hardships and high property taxes.
Rashid fought for property tax relief for homeowners and small businesses while campaigning to elect new property tax assessor Fritz Kaegi. As Deputy Chief of Staff for Cook County Clerk David Orr, he was dedicated to making government more efficient, ethical and transparent.
